INNATE INTELLIGENCE

I recently learned about coral reproduction in the Gulf of Mexico. Each August, between seven and ten days after the full moon, multiple coral species engage in mass spawning — a synchronized release of eggs and sperm into the water. Each species spawns during a unique time window, then stops, and another species begins. This fills the water with clouds of eggs and sperm, attracting many marine animals that feed on them. Interestingly, other creatures like fish, brittle stars, sponges, and Christmas tree worms spawn simultaneously.
This remarkable synchronization likely protects them from predators by overwhelming them with sheer numbers. But how do corals know when to spawn? Scientists believe three factors trigger it: water temperature, the moon’s phase, and sunset timing. While water temperatures in August and early September seem right, it’s still a mystery how corals sense temperature or track the lunar cycle.
This fascinating example shows the INNATE intelligence present in all living things—an internal wisdom guiding survival. For instance, when our bodies get cold, we shiver automatically to generate heat, without conscious thought. This innate intelligence flows through our nervous system, which is why, as Chiropractors, we focus on helping the body function optimally—not just treating symptoms.
