SPINAL FUSION

A few weeks ago, my Grandmother injured her lower back lifting something heavy. Though she had been seeing a Chiropractor in Victoria, TX, this time she went to her MD, who referred her to an orthopedic surgeon. X-rays revealed a fractured fifth lumbar vertebra, something known as a spondylolisthesis—a condition often present from birth and typically not the root cause of back pain.
Despite this, the surgeon recommended spinal fusion surgery, and feeling desperate, she went through with it. Unfortunately, weeks later, she had no relief and was getting worse. That’s when I found out what had happened. I immediately knew the surgery wasn’t addressing the true issue. She later saw another surgeon, who agreed the surgery likely wasn’t necessary.
Now, my family is starting to follow the advice I originally gave. No updates yet, but I’m hopeful.
This situation highlights why I strongly disagree with most spinal surgeries. In our office, we see about a 95% satisfaction rate with Chiropractic care, while surgery often leads to ongoing pain. If you or someone you know is considering surgery, please have them talk to us first. Chiropractic may offer the relief they need—without the risks.
