For nearly everyone, I recommend incorporating fish oil into your daily routine—because the health benefits are truly remarkable. Fish oil contains essential fatty acids, which means your body cannot produce them on its own. They must be obtained through diet or supplementation.
There are three primary classifications of fatty acids:
Omega-3s
Omega-6s
Omega-9s
Each of these plays an important role in maintaining good health, but balance is key. For example, while some Omega-6s are beneficial, an overabundance—especially common in the American diet—can lead to chronic inflammation. Fast food and processed snacks are particularly high in Omega-6s.
In contrast, Omega-3s, which are abundant in fish oil, are considered the healthiest of the three types. Omega-3s are found in:
Cold-water fish
Quality eggs
Avocados
Certain nuts
Interestingly, fish don't produce Omega-3s themselves—they get it by consuming smaller fish and marine vegetation rich in these fats. This is similar to how grass-fed cows provide healthier fat profiles than grain-fed cows. Grain-fed cattle have significantly higher levels of inflammatory Omega-6s, while grass-fed animals have a much better balance of essential fats.
Health Benefits of Omega-3 Fatty Acids:
Improved heart health
Powerful anti-inflammatory effects
Support for ADD/ADHD
Healthy cholesterol and lipid levels
Joint health and mobility
Strengthened immune function
Healthier skin and hair
Supports a healthy pregnancy
Relief from depression and mood disorders
Arthritis symptom reduction
May assist in weight loss
Even if you eat fish regularly, it’s difficult to ensure you’re getting optimal amounts of Omega-3s—especially given concerns about mercury and contaminants in some seafood. That’s why supplementing with high-quality fish oil is a smart, proactive choice.
